Bulama Bukarti, a lawyer, writer and human rights activist has revealed that residents in Zamfara State are forced to lend out their daughters to bandits in the region in order to avoid their entire families being killed by them.

He disclosed in a series of tweets that an unnamed man shared his story during a program on BBC Hausa, saying that he was asked to lend his daughter to the bandits for a week, and that she was raped for that period.

“On a weekly program of BBC Hausa that I was on last night, a father told a story that kept me awake. Bandits in Zamfara asked his brother to “lend” them his daughter for a week or they destroy them. They took her & raped her in their den for the period. His isn’t the only family.

Bukarti further revealed that the man said residents in villages can’t hold wedding ceremony without approval from the bandits, as they are made to pay “marriage fees”, “He said families in their villages can’t conduct any wedding ceremony until they seek permission from bandits and pay them “marriage fees”.”

“This is happening in a state where the Governor is taking photos with bandits, paying them and quarreling with soldiers to not attack them.” This is some of the payments demanded by the bandits, including farming fee for crop and harvest.
